Try This Hip Mobility Drill For Better Movement & Resilience
Mar 11, 2025
Any martial artist knows how crucial hip mobility is for effective movement and resilience. Tight hips can prevent the smooth transfer of force through your body, causing other joints to bear the load, which increases the risk of injury.
By creating more space between the joints, we encourage better relative motion, meaning that your joints move more efficiently, and as a result, so do you.
While asymmetries in the body don't always lead to pain, they can highlight areas that may need more attention or improvement.
The Shin Box is an excellent position for martial artists, not only for its practical use but also for exposing any imbalances between your hips.
In today’s video, Will Safford of Order & Progress shares some insightful ideas with Mark on improving mobility through breathing drills in the Shin Box. Mark then builds on this by showing how to incorporate these drills into a complete workout.
While Will focuses on building more resilient BJJ grapplers, the principles they share are valuable for anyone—whether you’re a martial artist or not!
