Hardstyle vs Competition Style Kettlebell Training

Kettlebells offer virtually endless training possibilities for a wide range of goals. As one of the most versatile fitness tools on the planet, they can be used anytime, anywhere—no gym required.

While kettlebells have been around for hundreds, possibly thousands of years, two primary styles of training have emerged in modern practice: Hardstyle and Competition Style.

Both offer unique benefits, and neither is inherently better than the other—it all depends on your goals.

Hardstyle training emphasizes powerful, controlled movements designed to build strength, athleticism, and conditioning.

Competition style (also known as Girevoy Sport) focuses on efficiency and endurance, with movements optimized for long, timed sets.

Most people begin with Hardstyle training to develop proper technique, body awareness, and foundational strength. Once proficiency is built, they may transition into the more technical, endurance-focused style of Competition training.

This is the progression Mark recommends for beginners as well.
